Ontario needs to take meaningful action to address climate change. Given that the province has a surplus of off-peak power that it currently sells at a loss, encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles could both increase domestic use of some of that surplus power and reduce transportation-related carbon emissions. Increasing public charging station infrastructure and providing tax breaks for people who purchase electric vehicles and install home charging stations would help in this respect. Even rebating the provincial sales tax portion of the sale price of electric vehicles would help. The government could also create jobs and make a meaningful difference in improving energy efficiency by supporting homeowner initiatives to use less energy
