I have serious concerns about the protection of boreal caribou in Ontario. Since I trust David Suzuki more than the federal or current provincial Ontario government, I'll quote from the Suzuki Foundation on this matter:
"The draft agreement says the government has a “robust” system of laws to protect caribou, but this glosses over the fact that the forest industry is exempt from the Endangered Species Act. Read that again. Logging is EXEMPT from recovery measures for at-risk forest-dwelling creatures that live in the boreal.
" The draft agreement references the risk-based range disturbance threshold that’s been around since 2008 (caribou need a minimum of 65% of their habitat to be undisturbed to have a minimum 60% probability of survival) but still doesn’t commit to implementing it.
"The draft agreement references the Caribou Conservation Plan as proof of an effective policy regime, despite the fact that it has never implemented its insurance policy (which says that there must be sufficient evidence that a local caribou population is viable before new logging begins)."
Once again, your government is failing an at-risk species.
