I am disappointed to see a reduction in the promises outlined in the previous plans - including extending the protections of the Greenbelt to Twelve Mile Creek on the Niagara Peninsula and land around Duffins Creek in Ajax and Pickering. Additionally, the Paris-Galt Moraine is an important freshwater source, housing multiple headwaters and should be protected as such.
The original plan also promised to add two acres of land to the Greenbelt for every acre developed using Minister’s Zoning Orders. I disagree that any land should be developed - there are options for intensification that would remove the need for more land and detached single family housing is not a sustainable future. However, if that path is deemed necessary, it is the least we could do to protect land elsewhere (matching the habitat type affected by development).
The Greenbelt is something Ontario should be extremely proud of, growing it would be a momentous act by the Ford government, destroying it is something that can never be undone.
