STOP taking protected environmentally sensitive lands from any jurisdiction to satisfy human created problems.
YES, mandate housing intensification percentages to 65% in already urbanized developed areas and increase the storey threshold for buildings so that all municipalities share the population growth. York Region has held it at 50% for the next 10 years and 55% thereafter even though towns like Newmarket want it higher so there isn’t more outward development. More low density urban sprawl adds to our growing carbon footprint and Ontarians are one of the worst culprits for emissions; you aren’t currently meeting 2030 goals yet you are adding to the emissions with this type of development land grab. Municipalities were planning their land use based on your promise and legislation in place for Greenbelt and protected lands so even more land is being developed across the province that just this proposal.
This government needs to do a better job at addressing the affordable housing crisis without adding to environmental destruction. Give regions and municipalities the mandated legislation for high density low emissions affordable housing with reforestation as a component, hold developers more accountable to contribute to ‘regreening’, more energy and water efficient housing and get rid of options to build mega single dwelling homes. UPWARDS NOT OUTWARDS!
