I am absolutely opposed to the expansion of Hamilton's urban boundaries. The last thing anyone needs is more sprawling, cheaply made McMansions. We need AFFORDABLE housing that are close to amenities so that people who need housing can live and function within our infrastructure.
There are many properties that are empty or can be repurposed and the government should be exploring all avenues to create affordable units within our existing city. That is where the infrastructure and means to earn a living is. Mixed use, affordable buildings should be the priority.
Not only would units within the boundaries be more accessible, and affordable, they would also be less damaging to the greenbelt. While the current Conservative government does not care about anything but the financial future of themselves and their partners, the majority of citizens recognize the climate crisis we are facing. We have overwhelmingly stated we do not want more sprawl. Removing green spaces is the last thing we should be doing.
Not only would we be doing environmental damage to our province, but we would be creating the conditions for flooding and other natural fallout from the destruction of our environment (lose of biodiversity, rising temperatures and pollution to name a few). Human beings are very bad at predicting the intricate ways that nature works and can rarely predict all of the fallout of destroying green spaces.
Lastly, I am opposed to the anti-democratic methods of this government. They will use sledge hammers on the rights and wishes of their citizens to get what they want. After watching what happened with the CUPE strike, I do not trust the government to do anything "in good faith" and do not want to see this plan impact my city negatively, so that they can line the pockets of developers.
