The green belt area and its surrounding areas are not in parts of Ontario where there are as many housing issues. The areas around the moraine are already middle to high income areas where the families have a luxury of travel to and from places such as their places of work. The housing crisis is not going to be helped by building more housing outside of the regions where Canadians need it most. Instead of building more houses the currently rental crisis in Toronto and it's surrounding areas should be addressed. When the average rental in the city is almost one thousand or more dollars a month more than the average mortgage, and most of these units sit vacant, this is a greater problem then building more housing people cannot afford or that wealthy investor groups will snatch up first. Furthermore any sort of development on the greenbelt only puts us further in the other direction of where we need to be to battle climate change. The moraine is an important part of a natural waterway that does more to help the environment than any amount of acreage of housing can accomplish. There is still plenty of land which is developable in surrounding areas that we do not need to contribute to urban sprawl in towns and cities that will lose more than they will gain.
