Currently I am studying at the University of Waterloo to be a City Planner. As someone who will be assessing the impact of the proposed changes to the Greenbelt and will likely have to deal with the effects and negative impact of the changes, the proposal is very concerning to me. This does not appear to be in the best interest of Ontarians or Canadians and it appears that none of the planning recommendations are being looked at. The Oak Ridge Moraine, Hamilton Official Plan, Goals of Ontario, and the Provincial Policy Plan clearly do not support these changes. The preservation of the worlds largest greenbelt is important and destroying it for short term gain is not the correct answer. The Ontario government is currently spending millions of dollars to combat climate change because of our past decisions to put development first over the environment. Why are we making the same decisions when we already know the outcome? There are other solutions that are not being fully looked at or considered including infill, changing zoning, etc.
