Doug Ford’s decision to change what constitutes as the Green Belt of Ontario shows that his priorities lie more in personal profit rather than the benefit of the province and its people.

Canada‘s real estate and rent costs have exceedingly outpaced the average wages of Canadians across the country.

By 2016, the average cost of a detached home was nearly $2 million dollars, and average rent for one-bedroom apartments across Ontario have now averaged between $1500 and $3000 a month.

Meanwhile, the average Canadian makes $50K a year before taxes, the average young Canadian makes around $30K a year before taxes, and thus even at the lowest average costs of rent for a one-bedroom apartment, the cost of rent would take up 1/3 or 3/5 of the average Canadian’s annual income.

For Doug Ford to be aware of this, and seek not only to make more houses but do so at the cost of protected land which seeks to maintain any balance with nature we have left, proves that his interests only lie with lining his own pockets at the cost of the citizens and land he is responsible for.

His display of short-sighted greed and how willing he is to continue allowing his citizens to suffer and destroy the land that is providing us and many wildlife animals clean air and a means to live is evidence of how under qualified and undeserving of the leadership role he has been given.

These actions of his must be stopped, and we must take the steps we need to take towards making Ontario a better place for all.
