I do not support the government’s proposed changes to the Greenbelt to build housing faster and in a targeted manner. There is no need to remove land from the greenbelt where so much land already exists and can be made better use of. This can be done faster, and in a more economically viable manner, and for better sustainability than removing protected lands.
Further, the suggestion that this will lead to an overall expansion of the Greenbelt is a bait and switch tactic as some of the proposed lands to include are already protected. The Greenbelt was meant as a permanent protected area that this government had previously promised not to touch. Don’t go back on your word.
Finally, it is egregious that developers stand to benefit most from this change. Not Ontarians at large and certainly not low income citizen or newcomers who need stable, affordable housing on existing lands and with enhanced protections there.
