Do not go back on a promise. You jeopardize the future unnecessarily. Thinking short term is limiting and yet irrevocable. Buildings in the GTA and within the City of Toronto itself, suitable for family size housing units, sit empty waiting for the to be 100% vacant so that they can be developed. Parcels of land exist within the GTA. Tax vacant buildings per unit as a revenue stream. The Covid pandemic has shown that many families no longer need to be in close proximity to Toronto and their migration out of the city will only continue. Utilize undeveloped lands outside the existing Greenbelt. Why even consider developing on the Greenbelt when it will not solve the housing issues the province faces. This has been researched and reported.
You can not replace the Greenbelt lands or swap them out without damaging the ecosystem that exists within the existing Greenbelt lands. The land at the edges of the Greenbelt plays an important part of the whole not just the lands at the centre. And you are suggesting adding lands that are already protected under other acts.
Do not assume that Ontarians will not notice or aren't concerned. Ontarians are proud of our Greenbelt and the priority that was placed on it leading to its creation. Ontarians are not proud of politicians who renege on a promise. And they will not vote for a premier who has lied. They simply wont. This will lead to a change of government. Stick to your promise. Leave the Greenbelt untouched. Admit you were wrong to suggest developing the Greenbelt and people will forgive in time. Otherwise prepare to loose the votes you require to stay in office. My future depends on the protected lands of the Greenbelt and so does yours.
