I have previously worked on the OPRREC program, in an effort to protect the remaining Ojibway Massasauga rattlesnakes. In the two years working with Wildlife Preservation Canada, I noticed the population had taken a hit. It is very important that the government supports population augmentation for this group of snakes. The only way this small population will survive is if we assist with translocations and reintroductions. Of course a lot of thought and planning needs to be put into identifying the ideal location for reintroduction, but I think it will be a necessary step in preserving this population of Massasaugas. They are beautiful animals and certainly not as dangerous as many believe them to be. I would love for future generations to have the opportunity to see these animals in the wild as I have been able to. To let them perish would be a disgrace.
