The greenbelt is essential to preserve biodiversity in the Greater Toronto Area, clean our air and water, reduce flood risk (see the human toll of overdeveloping watersheds during Hurricane Hazel in the 50s.) provide homes to wildlife and offer communities with greenspace to explore. We do not need another car community, which may lead to the expansion of highways, more pollution, and frankly, a less beautiful province.
Don't get me wrong, housing is a huge issue! But the real answer is not to continuously expand outward, steamrolling what little dedicated greenspace (and not just city parks, real greenspace that can support wildlife) but to densify inward (and revamp zoning to fix Toronto's missing middle). Given the climate crisis we are going through, this is not a reasonable solution, and looks awful on a global stage. Development needs to be sustainable.
