I STRONGLY oppose so many of Bill 23's measures. Specifically, I am concerned about
- the removal of conservation authority oversight (streamline perhaps, but do NOT remove - they have played a critical role in flood and natural area protection)
- the removal of local control over development charges (these charges reflect the REAL costs of housing. They should be lower in built up areas - which is exactly where we should be funneling our new home construction)
- the notion that somehow we will "move" wetlands and other areas through "no net loss". Let's not kid ourselves - we will not be able to recreate all the complicated ecological interconnections that have taken 100s of years to develop
- the infringement into the greenbelt. we already have sufficient space in our plans. The opening up of these lands flies in the face of what scientists are saying is crucial for protection of nature. This decision is just before COP15 in Montreal. Are you kidding me?
YES let's solve the housing crisis. But so many people from so many walks of life have come to realize that Bill 23 has so many financial, democratic and ecological shortcomings. Repeal or gut it.
