I am strongly opposed to the proposed removal or redesignation of lands in the Greenbelt to build housing.

The Greenbelt was created expressly to stop losses of farmland and natural heritage to development and the proposed changes directly contradict this intent. The changes are a major sign of disrespect for the Greenbelt that sends a message to all that the Greenbelt is open for development. Housing needs do not have to be met on protected lands. Ontario’s Housing Affordability Task Force in their 2022 report stated that land is available for housing without resorting to development in environmentally sensitive areas.

Development of the Greenbelt would result in a loss of the many ecoservices generated by these lands including flood attenuation, water purification, erosion control, carbon storage, and recreation and tourism opportunities. Municipalities, already challenged by mitigating the impacts of climate change, would have to compensate for the lost services through expanded infrastructure. Their citizens would bear the costs through increased taxation.

The only winners of the proposed changes to the Greenbelt Plan are the developers.
