One of the election promises of Premier Doug Ford was that the government would leave the Greenbelt alone. The Conservatives should be held to account over this promise. I know that if this goes through I will not be voting Conservative ever again, not with Ford at the helm nor with any new leader.

The Greenbelt is something that is needed for Ontario’s food security and it’s environment. Farmland is precious and a lot of these areas are highly classified arable lands.

Precious farmland and green spaces will be forever lost to these new developments. Houses will crop up along with their box stores and plazas but without any of the right infrastructure. Taxpayers will end up funding infrastructure that will still be inadequate for such a dispersed population. The people in these new developments will be driving hours each day to get to work in the GTA.

The government should do better and develop areas in older neighborhoods where tracts of land are dilapidated and unused. It’s better to add density in urban areas instead of contributing to a massive sprawl.

In the short run, eating into the Greenbelt will make a few people a lot of money. But in the long run, Ontarians will lose a very important part of the environment that they’ll never get back.
