I reject the proposal to end the Cap n Trade Program. The IPCC just released their special report stating that we must take rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society" to avoid disastrous levels of global warming. Global net emissions of carbon dioxide would need to fall by 45% from 2010 levels by 2030 and reach "net zero" around 2050 in order to keep the warming around 1.5 degrees C. Furthermore, many municipalities around the province have opted for an 80 by 50 target. That is, 80% CO2 reductions below 2010 levels by 2050. Ontarians are demanding climate action and this proposal is in direct conflict with their wishes and needs. The Cap n Trade program is much better than a forced federal carbon tax and much less costlier than any other climate proposal. In fact, cap n trade is a conservative approach allowing carbon markets competitively dictate the price of carbon. I am all for amending the way cap n trade is handled and discussed but outright cancellation does not help the people of Ontario to combat climate change. This is a move that will put our and future generations at risk of being unprepared to combat a rapidly changing climate. For these reasons, I cannot accept this bill and reject the cancellation of Cap n Trade in Ontario.
