I am writing to speak against Bill 4, Cancellation of the Cap and Trade program. Just this week the Nobel prize for economics was awarded to Paul Romer and William Nauhaus for their work related to the economic costs of climate change. It is sadly ironic that the Ontario Government is proposing the elimination of cap and trade, not to mention a reduction in the gas tax; both of which will only serve to encourage the use of more fossil fuels in Ontario.
The lost revenues of cap and trade forced the cancellation of GreenOn rebates. This is making things difficult for school boards, organizations in charge of socially assisted housing, and low income people. These groups wanted to lower their energy bills and improve the comfort and quality of their homes.
I strongly urge Premier Ford and his government to making decisions based on evidence and research as opposed to a populist, ideological agenda. The economic opportunities of investing in new technologies and investing in worker training for low carbon industries would serve Ontarians well both now and in the future.
Bill 4 would move Ontario backward.
