Hello,
This act is a total travesty. We need, in this moment, to be doing anything and everything we possibly can to mitigate climate change and limit carbon emissions. The greenhouse gas cap and trade program was (moderately) starting to limit emissions AND generating money for the province. Carbon pricing is a tool we MUST employ right now.
The recent UN report on climate change proposes "the imposition of a carbon tax many, many times higher than those currently in use or being considered — they propose a tax of up to $5,000 per ton of carbon dioxide by 2030, growing to $27,000 per ton by 2100. Today, the average price of carbon across 42 major economies is just $8 per ton." (http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2018/10/un-says-climate-genocide-coming-…) So for us to be abandoning carbon pricing at this point in time is just sheer denialism.
I want my home province to be a leader in climate change, not a pathetic, backwards-looking laggard. I think the people of Ontario might be willing to make a few sacrifices if it means creating a liveable planet past the year 2060. I know I am.
Thank you.
