Re ERO number 019-8830.
I have a fairly extensive background in agriculture.
In my opinion Norfolk County’s proposed Urban Boundary Expansion at communities like Waterford for example sets a precedent and is a threat to the specialty crop land found on the Norfolk Sand Plain … responsible development is not done on some of the most productive, well managed specialty crop land to be found anywhere in North America.
Beyond our own farms, I have worked in many specialty crops and have consulted with a very large number of specialty crop growers over my working career. There is a long history of Norfolk residents fighting to protect these farms from encroachment by railway, power tower, and housing development.
Policymakers would know that the rich specialty crop heritage and future of the Norfolk Sand Plain ( found also in parts of Oxford, Brant and Elgin ) is built : not only on rich and varied soil types but also ; on the hard work of generations who tilled the land ; on the bountiful supply of rainfall and groundwater and irrigation technology ; on a Carolina microclimate ; sophisticated management of farm labour including offshore labour ; and the most up-to-date application of on-farm production, processing, packaging, shipping and marketing … all found in some of the areas proposed to be included in the urban boundaries.
