In view of the recent United Nations intergovernmental report on climate change, it is irresponsible for the Ontario government to cancel the Cap and Trade Program in Ontario. Cap and trade has significantly reduced carbon emissions in British Columbia and other jurisdictions. Last week a scientist was awarded a Nobel Prize for his research that proved taxing carbon was an effective tool in lowering carbon emissions. Instead of helping our failing environment, the cancellation of this important act will only exasperate it and increase global warming. We cannot afford ignore the environmental crisis we are in any longer.
The Ontario government needs to take environment seriously and do something about it. This is not only a moral issue, but an economic one too. Bring in new technologies to help the environment, create financial incentives for builders and ordinary citizens to retrofit their homes, encourage sustainability, make heavy polluters pay. This is not a free ride. This is not a planet with limitless resources. Can we afford to fight more and more wild fires, flooding, hurricanes? In the long run, these natural catastrophies caused by climate change will cost us more money than what will be saved by cancelling vital environmental programs like the Cap and Trade. I for one am fed up with government inaction and demand that the Ontario government take action against global warming immediately.
