I think the provincial government should focus on protecting the habitat of the Chimney Swift, Davis’s Shieldback, and the Lesser Yellowlegs if they wish to protect and recover them. The government should also consider expanding the protections offered to these species’ habitat by offering them regulated habitat protections over general habitat protections. Currently, general habitat only protects places known to be used, but not areas where they may have been used in the past or might use in the future. Studies should be conducted to find suitable habitat for these species, even if they’re not currently living there, in order to secure vital habitat needed to recover the species that is now gone due to habitat loss. Habitats like old growth forests and caves for Chimney Swifts, edge habitat and Oak woodland openings with dry, well drained sandy soils for the Shieldback, and wetland areas like peatlands and marshes for the Lesser Yellowlegs should be identified and given regulated habitat protections. With regulated habitat protections for these habitats, the Government is more likely to prevent further habitat loss and succeed in its efforts to protect and recover these endangered species.
