I want to express my concerns about the proposal for a new interim combined sewer outlet at 955 Lake Shore Blvd (Ontario Place).
The information posted on the Environment Registry of Ontario is lacking in detail (for example the map showing the location of the sewer outlet does not indicate the presence of the breakwater which creates the Ontario Place West Channel - and restricts water movement within the channel). There is no indication of any timelines or funds budgeted for the establishment of a final combined sewer outlet, which may result in the "interim" outlet becoming permanent. There are legitimate concerns about the impact this approach will have on the water quality along a section of the waterfront used by many individuals for boating and pleasure. There is no documentation about the flushing rate of the West Channel where the sewer outlet will discharge. And finally, this provincial proposal appears to be solely for the benefit of a private company and moves against the work done by the City of Toronto to separate and replace combined sewer outlets (in order to reduce the discharge of raw sewage) and fails to meet the obligations of the international agreements signed to protect the water quality of the Great Lakes. More information needs to be released to the public and consultations held before any approval is granted to proceed.
To be honest, this provincial proposal should be rejected.
