I am commenting on the proposal for an interim combined sewer to support development at 955 Lake Shore Boulevard (Ontario Place).
I am absolutely opposed to this proposal.
The Ontario government proposal the re-locate and combine the current City of Toronto sewer outflows into the West Channel just STINKS.
This proposal stinks for many reasons:
- Generally this is NOT in greater interests of the people of Ontario or the people of Toronto.
- The province/Infrastructure Ontario/Ministry of the Environment has not held any consultations about this work with the general public.
- Combining the 4 City pipe lines into one outflow goes against decades of work by the City of Toronto to separate and replace combined sewers across the city to prevent the discharge of raw sewage into Lake Ontario.
- This effluent also risks human health in terms of water quality at beaches, fishing, wildlife and the quality of the lake as an attraction for Canadian and international visitors. Who would want to walk along the western sandy beach or the western board walk, looking at God knows what, floating or washed up onto the beach and having to breathe the stench of a sewer on a hot summer day.
- The province of Ontario signed and re-committed to the 'Canada-Ontario Agreement on Great Lakes Water Quality and Ecosystem Health' on May 27, 2021 (part of the larger 'Canada-US Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement') and here we are just over 3 years later with the Ontario government proposing to dump raw sewage into lake Ontario and even worse, into the West Channel where it has NO place to go.
So much for the good stewardship of Lake Ontario.
- The Ontario taxpayer will be paying for this to be done to satisfy the interests of a private corporate project.
- The overall cost of doing this has been all but hidden from the general public. As with all things related to the Ontario Place/Themes project, there has been NO transparency. I would also surmise that any proposed cost figure to be presented is wholly in-adequate.
PLEASE DENY THIS PERMIT.
