I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposeda approval for combined sewer overflows (CSOs) at Ontario Place.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ON LAKE ONTARIO:
Lake Ontario is a vital freshwater resource for millions of people and a diverse ecosystem. Discharging stormwater, particularly from combined sewer systems that often contain untreated pollutants, poses a significant risk to water quality, aquatic habitats, and biodiversity.

Contaminants such as heavy metals, pathogens, and chemicals could harm fish populations and disrupt the ecological balance of the lake.
Ontario has committed to protecting the Great Lakes through various agreements, including the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. Approving this proposal contradicts these commitments.

PUBLIC HEALTH RISKS AND RECREATIONAL USE:
Lake Ontario serves as a drinking water source for many communities and is also a hub for recreational activities.

The beaches near Ontario Place, such as Sunnyside Beach and Hanlan’s Point, are popular with residents and visitors alike for swimming, kayaking, and other water-based activities. Discharging potentially untreated or inadequately treated stormwater into the lake could put swimmers at risk of exposure to harmful bacteria and pollutants.
Past reports of E. coli contamination at Toronto’s beaches are a reminder of the real health hazards posed by polluted water. This plan could exacerbate such issues, leading to more frequent beach closures and decreased public trust in the safety of these cherished spaces.

NEGATIVE IMPACT ON ONTARIO PLACE'S REPUTATION AND PUBLIC ENJOYMENT:
Ontario Place is a beloved public space known for its connection to nature and the waterfront. Allowing stormwater discharge into the area could diminish its appeal and usability, discouraging tourism and community engagement. Families, children, and visitors should feel confident that the water surrounding Ontario Place is clean and safe.

MISSED OPPORTUNITIES FOR MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE SOLUTIONS:
This plan relies on outdated infrastructure solutions instead of investing in sustainable, long-term alternatives, such as green infrastructure, stormwater retention systems, or separating stormwater from sewage entirely. These options, though more expensive upfront, would provide lasting benefits for the environment, public health, and recreational use of Lake Ontario.

I urge the government and Infrastructure Ontario to reconsider this proposal and explore cleaner, more sustainable approaches to managing stormwater. Protecting Lake Ontario’s water quality is essential for the health, safety, and enjoyment of future generations.

Thank you for considering my concerns. I strongly hope the government will prioritize protecting Lake Ontario, its surrounding beaches, and the people who swim in and enjoy the lake.

Sincerely,
Toronto Resident
