I am writing to express my opposition to any proposal to repeal or significantly weaken Ontario’s Endangered Species Act, 2007. This legislation plays a critical role in identifying, protecting, and supporting the recovery of species at risk and their habitats across the province.

Since its implementation, the Endangered Species Act has provided a science-based framework for assessing the conservation status of species and establishing clear legal obligations to prevent further decline. Ontario is home to more than 230 species listed as at risk. Many of these face threats such as habitat loss, pollution, invasive species, and climate change. Without legal protections, these pressures are likely to intensify, increasing the likelihood of extirpation or extinction.

The Act is not just about wildlife—it also contributes to the long-term health of ecosystems that support agriculture, clean water, forestry, and tourism. Research has consistently shown that protecting biodiversity yields economic and social benefits. Repealing the ESA would not only risk the loss of irreplaceable species, but could also undermine the ecological services on which many Ontario communities depend.

While I understand the importance of balancing environmental protection with development, repealing the Act would remove an essential tool for ensuring that this balance is maintained. Rather than repeal, the Act could be improved by enhancing implementation, increasing transparency, and supporting more collaborative approaches with Indigenous communities, landowners, and other stakeholders.

Strong species-at-risk legislation reflects a commitment to responsible environmental stewardship. I urge you to maintain the Endangered Species Act and ensure that it continues to be a meaningful mechanism for conservation in Ontario.
