We face urgent environmental challenges and undermining science-based conservation efforts and neglecting meaningful consultation with Indigenous Peoples--as required by both Canadian law and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples--represents a failure of responsible governance. Protecting endangered species is our moral and legal obligation. Any legislation that affects land, water, and biodiversity must be developed transparently and collaboratively, with full participation from Indigenous nations and impacted communities.

I strongly oppose this new legislation. Dismantling essential protections for endangered wildlife and ecosystems and disregarding the rights and sovereignty of Indigenous communities is destructive, counterintuitive to productive and sustainable ways forward and and simply stands on the wrong side of history if it were to be implemented. I urge this government to withdraw this legislation and engage in meaningful consultation with Indigenous leaders, scientists, environmental experts, and the public.
