Efficiency is not always effective. We need checks and balances that are science based, not rooted in partisan politics. Our beautiful Province is made less so when sensitive habitat is ruined by development and roads interrupt wildlife corridors. Considering how very far we are from protecting our climate and the ecosystem, we need a balanced approach, not a one-sided law that further erodes the few protections that remain.
Consider the fact that in parts of Ontario, 90% of tree cover has been removed from the watershed. The direct consequence is flooding and/or drought. If we lose our important native species, we lose control over clean water and keeping mosquitoes and rodents in check, to name a few obvious results - beyond the fact that the disappearance of pollinators will end our ability to grow enough food crops. It is a direct balance of cause and effect and governments simply are not qualified to make these decisions when their awareness only extends to the immediate needs of industry and development. Long term thinking is also required. Please redo this law with the input of scientists and planning that includes longevity.
