The proposal demonstrates the lack of understanding about the environment. Not only does biodiversity (species and habitat diversity) strengthen our environments but in fact, the ecosystems provide services to us that save us money. These services include water filtration, erosion control, flood mitigation, maintaining soil fertility, etc. These services save us hundreds of thousands of dollars. If Doug Ford had truly meant what he said about keeping his hands of the greenbelt, he would not be trying to repeal protections involving critical species and related habitats. He would be pushing industry to innovate and find creative solutions to our problems instead of destroying the little remaining environment we have. Especially thinking about moving up to the Ring of Fire which is in fact a HUGE carbon store that helps us mitigate the effects of pollution and carbon dioxide emissions, yet another ecosystem service.
Please Doug Ford and other government officials, consider not only the species at risk as individual organisms silently begging for your empathy and protection, but also the way that you are blatantly ignoring the rights of Indigenous peoples and all other Canadians. By steamrolling these protections you are allowing the detrimental degradation of our environment and our homes.
