I oppose Bill 5 and changes to ESA 2007 as well as new Species Conservation Act 2025. Changes to oversight of environmental assessments, SAR oversight and approvals, and indigenous treaty rights to review impacts on asserted territories and wildlife are going too far. Repeatedly industry has demonstrated that it will not conform to registry processes and follow requirements. Our natural environment & sensitive species are being eroded and gradually wiped out whether it be in Southern Ontario or in caribou ranges. Oversight and proper mitigation and avoidance measures are needed. These legislative changes are greedy and will harm Ontario in the long term. Much of industry cheats and skimps. It's harms the pocket books of the average person and our future. Step back and revalue. The Minister created the current back log when it moved SAR from MNR to MECP and cut staff. More staff are needed, better tools and more management support to expedite approvals. The Minister is being two faced in that he created this mess when cutting the left arm away & adding operational burden.
I worry that my kids will never grow up seeing undisturbed habitats and once common wildlife like Eastern wood peewee, snapping turtles and painted turtles. These changes will increase decline of SAR, their habitat and harm progress made with indigenous communities. If adequate mitigation is not in place for the Ring of Fire caribou in that range will be irreparably harmed. Halt these changes.
