Dear Premier Doug Ford,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the proposed changes outlined in the "Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, 2025." Specifically, the repeal of the Ontario Endangered Species Act and its replacement with the Species Conservation Act raises significant alarm.
The Endangered Species Act has long been a cornerstone of environmental protection in Ontario, ensuring the survival and recovery of species at risk. The proposed changes, which narrow the definition of "habitat" and eliminate provincial protection for federally listed migratory birds and aquatic species, undermine decades of progress in safeguarding biodiversity. These revisions prioritize short-term economic gains over the long-term health of our ecosystems, which are vital to the well-being of all Ontarians.
Furthermore, the establishment of "special economic zones" exempt from applicable laws sets a dangerous precedent. This approach erodes transparency, accountability, and environmental stewardship, while disregarding the rights of Indigenous communities and the principles of reconciliation.
Ontario's natural heritage is irreplaceable. Once lost, it cannot be recovered. I urge you to reconsider these changes and uphold the commitment to protecting our province's biodiversity for current and future generations.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
