This act is a bold faced attempt to circumvent the law rather than amend it.
If there are exemptions to the Endangered Species Act on the basis of "whether or not it's a good move financially"; then what is the point of the act at all.
- "the government have the discretion on what species are protected" (they are not the experts)
- "the revised definition of habitat will be included and harassment of species will not be an activity that requires registration or a permit" (this is disgusting and neuters the act completely)
"Harassment is defined as an activity that disrupts a protected species' normal behavior in a way that adversely affects its ability to carry out life processes. This can include behaviors that prevent a species from feeding, breeding, or sheltering."
This essentially says, harming endangered species, and destroying their nests and habitats is prohibited. This provision is being removed Species Conservation Act 2025 and is in fact the mechanism by which the conservation of species occurs.
I am very much against Species Conservation Act, 2025 and hope that it's journey into become legislature ends at this stage. It completely disrespects conservation and the animals that call Ontario home. It shows complete disdain for our province and Canada. It's the destruction of our native species for the sake of big business and cheap quick development with known bad consequences.
Please rename this act to "We hate turtles and birds act, 2025" for the sake of transparency.
