This decision is an insult not only to environmental science but also to the long-standing stewardship traditions of Indigenous Peoples across Ontario. Indigenous Nations have cared for this land with respect, foresight, and a deep understanding of ecological balance for thousands of years. The reckless gutting of species protections directly violates these principles and further erodes the government's commitments to reconciliation.
By prioritizing short-term industrial development over the health of ecosystems, the government is disregarding Indigenous rights, traditional knowledge, and treaty obligations. This approach dishonours the duty to consult Indigenous communities meaningfully on matters that affect their lands, waters, and the species they have protected for generations.
Ontario must stop treating the natural world as expendable. True prosperity comes from respecting and protecting the land, not exploiting it until it collapses. Indigenous communities have shown the way for millennia. Ignoring their wisdom and their rights is not progress. It is a path toward ruin.
I call on the Ontario government to abandon Bill 5, uphold the Endangered Species Act, and show real respect for both biodiversity and Indigenous leadership.
