Ontario is home to one of the most threatened ecosystems in Canada: the Carolinian forest. Once expansive, it has been decimated by reckless development, ripped away for toxic, temporary building structures that left behind environmental degradation.

The Carolinian forest is a warning. It shows exactly what happens when short-term profits are placed ahead of ecological survival. If this government repeals the Endangered Species Act, the destruction we witnessed there will be repeated across every remaining forest, wetland, and grassland in Ontario.

Repealing species protections will not create prosperity. It will only ensure that what little natural heritage we have left is erased in the name of temporary economic gain, leaving behind dead soil, contaminated water, and a legacy of irreversible loss.

The Carolinian zone should be treated as sacred. Instead, it has been nearly destroyed. Will the rest of Ontario's ecosystems be next?

We do not need more cautionary tales. We need real leadership.
