I am writing to express serious concern about any proposals to weaken or replace the Ontario Endangered Species Act (ESA) in favor of short-term economic interests.

The ESA exists to protect the province’s most vulnerable wildlife—species whose very survival is at risk due to human activity. Replacing this critical legislation to accommodate industrial development or profit-driven agendas would be a profound mistake with irreversible consequences. Once a species is gone, it is gone forever. No economic gain can compensate for that loss.

Ontario’s biodiversity is not only a natural heritage we are morally obligated to protect, but also a foundation for long-term ecological stability and economic resilience. Healthy ecosystems support agriculture, clean water, climate regulation, and tourism. Gutting environmental protections undermines these assets and sends a dangerous message: that convenience and corporate pressure are more valuable than conservation, science, and sustainability.

I urge you to uphold the integrity of the Ontario Endangered Species Act. Strengthen it, enforce it, and ensure that conservation decisions are led by science, not profit. Future generations will judge us by how we treat the natural world today.

Protect the ESA. Protect Ontario’s future.
