Dear Members of the Ontario Government,

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed Species Conservation Act, 2025, which seeks to replace the Endangered Species Act, 2007. While the bill aims to balance economic growth with species protection, it significantly weakens environmental safeguards and threatens Ontario's biodiversity.

Key Concerns:

1. Narrow Habitat Definition: The proposed redefinition of "habitat" to include only a species' immediate dwelling and surrounding area excludes the broader ecosystems essential for species' survival. This undermines the comprehensive protection previously afforded to at-risk species.

2. Reduced Oversight: By allowing a "register-first" approach, the bill permits developers to begin projects without completing thorough environmental assessments. This shift increases the risk of irreversible harm to vulnerable habitats.

3. Elimination of Recovery Strategies: The bill removes the requirement for recovery strategies and management plans, abandoning proactive measures crucial for the survival and recovery of endangered species.

4. Exemption for Certain Species: Migratory birds and aquatic species lose provincial protection under this bill, relying solely on federal legislation, which may not address specific local conservation needs.

5. Economic Prioritization Over Conservation: While economic development is important, this bill tilts too far in prioritizing short-term economic interests over the long-term health of Ontario's ecosystems and biodiversity.

I urge the Ontario government to reconsider this bill and prioritize robust protections for wildlife and natural habitats. A sustainable approach to development should balance economic progress with ecological preservation, ensuring a thriving future for both our economy and environment.

Thank you for considering this critical issue. I hope my concerns are taken into account during the legislative process.

Yours sincerely,
Concerned Ontarian
