I am writing to express my deep disappointment and concern regarding the Ontario government’s proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act (2007) and the development of the Species Conservation Act (2025). These proposals risk undermining the foundational protections that have long served to safeguard Ontario’s most vulnerable wildlife and ecosystems.

The Endangered Species Act, 2007 has been internationally recognized as a gold standard for species at risk legislation. Its science-based approach, mandatory timelines for recovery planning, and automatic habitat protections have been critical in guiding conservation efforts. The proposed changes, however, appear to significantly weaken these core principles by introducing greater discretionary power, delaying or avoiding the implementation of recovery strategies, and creating pathways for development and industry to override species protections.

Replacing or sidelining the ESA with a new framework—particularly one that prioritizes economic development over ecological integrity—sends a troubling message about Ontario's commitment to biodiversity. These changes are occurring at a time when we face a global biodiversity crisis, with the United Nations reporting alarming rates of species loss.

Ontarians value our natural heritage and expect strong, transparent, and scientifically grounded policies to protect it. Weakening protections under the guise of streamlining is not only short-sighted—it also contradicts the government’s responsibilities under both provincial and international environmental commitments.

The biodiversity of Ontario deserves thoughtful stewardship, not deregulation. I respectfully request that you reconsider the direction of these proposed changes and reaffirm your commitment to the protection and recovery of endangered species in our province.
