I have been an Ontario resident for over 40 years and have never felt the need to comment on proposed legislative changes until now.
During this time of political and environmental uncertainty, it is not the time to weaken our protection of species at risk and their habitats. Like people, the things we need to survive are not just limited to the small space we call home. Animals and birds are sensitive to changes in their immediate habitat and the spaces they visit when migrating. It is amazing feat that tiny birds like the Blackpoll Warbler travel thousands of kilometers from South America to Canada’s Boreal Forest to breed. On their way through Canada, these birds need to stop to feed and rest multiple times to successfully complete their journey. These vital migration rest stops need to be protected too.
Normal, everyday people like me care about these issues but often feel like our voices are unheard or not valued. I urge the Ontario government to please reconsider the proposed changes and instead strengthen protections of the wonderful natural environment that we have been given stewardship over.
Thank you for your consideration.
