I do not agree with the proposed changes to the Endangered Species Act nor the Species Conservation Act. I do not agree with Bill 5. I do not agree with the declaration of regulation-free zones for resource extraction nor real estate development.
The Ford/Ontario government has already caused such environmental destruction and devastation with the work at Ontario Place, the Ontario Science Centre, and all along the Ontario Line transit line.
I live in close proximity to some of these projects and have witnessed first hand the government's failure to do proper environmental assessments prior to starting work, with ever expanding complications and problems, and billowing budgets. Subcontracted companies are clear-cutting trees without proper permits or approvals. It is heartbreaking to see the damage being done by these projects, some of which were completely unnecessary and undesirable, and in some cases (i.e., Therme), not even properly vetted prior to signing a contract! Who's benefitting from these fast-tracked projects that are being pushed ahead at the expense of our natural spaces and native species?
Removing environmental protections would allow for more of the same kind of destruction, without any public consultation or regard for the well-being of our endangered and at-risk species. Destruction of our natural & protected environments will contribute to the collapse of ecosystems and exacerbate climate problems. This is not the kind of future I wish upon my child.
