When will we ever learn? As species numbers and overall biodiversity continue to decline due to human activity, the Endangered Species need protection now more than ever. Reducing or eliminating the Endangered Species Act would be an act of insanity and self destruction. It is long overdue for us humans to abandon the profit over planet way and begin to stabilize the existence of all life on the Planet. Expanding human populations and urban sprawl, especially in Ontario, have already caused some wildlife to wander into residential areas as their habitat destruction continues - often leading them to be destroyed by frightened residents. I have personally witnessed the decline and disappearance of bird and other species in my local area in my lifetime.
Scientific discoveries over the last two decades have clearly demonstrated our interdependence on healthy ecosystems (Fungal networks, Tree communications, the urgency of addressing climate change etc.). Each and every creature within our ecosystems play a role in the maintenance of life within these systems. We MUST protect the habitats we live within - The Endangered Species Act helps to do that.
I live in an area of SW Ontario that lacks any kind of regulation to protect Trees and Woodlots because our local municipality has bowed down to pressure from local farm organizations. The CK municipality has stated that they believe trusting in the Stewardship ways of farmers is sufficient. They are wrong. Clear cutting and habitat destruction continues here, even though our Tree cover is dismal to begin with. When is enough enough? The power of a few humans with specific for profit intentions should NEVER, EVER override the needs of all life.
