I am writing today to express my absolute opposition to this proposal. This proposal represents a very concerning step backwards for vital environmental protection in Ontario. I think the message it sends is clear: speed and convenience for development are the priority. Over biodiversity, and legal obligations to protect species at risk. Simply put: we’d prefer to take the easy way out and if the wildlife of Ontario is in the crossfire of that, oh well.
By enabling the Minister to issue permits under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) more quickly—particularly for so-called “provincial priority” projects—this proposal undermines the very foundation of the ESA, which is to ensure that development is carried out responsibly, with proper assessment of its impact on vulnerable wildlife.
Fast-tracking permits equals recklessness. Endangered species cannot afford bureaucratic shortcuts or political expediency. Their survival is not an obstacle to progress, to think so is a very sad reflection and admission of what matters for this government.
This proposal weakens public trust by removing meaningful oversight and public input. Sidelines scientific evaluation in favor of arbitrary political timelines. Risks setting a precedent where short-term development gains permanently damage long-term ecological systems. Again: we want to do what we want, if wildlife is in the crossfire, oh well.
Ontario has already witnessed the erosion of environmental protections through actions like Greenbelt land grabs and diminished conservation authority powers. This proposal continues that trend and runs counter to the province’s responsibility under both provincial and federal law to protect biodiversity.
I urge the government to abandon this short-sighted and dangerous proposal. The Canada I know would be proud to take its time. Proud to do its due diligence. And not put easy in-front of what is clearly more important. Someone proposed this because it’s easy, not because it’s hard.
Stop trading away Ontario’s natural heritage for political convenience.
