An animal species requires more than just a "dwelling place" to survive. As the current Endangered Species Act (2007) stipulates, this inlcudes area for feeding and migration which is much larger than simply the area "immediately surrounding a dwelling place" (stated by the proposed ammendment). Protecting an animal's den or nest, while allowing the area they rely on for food and migratory shelters to be compromised or eliminated, is insufficient in conserving a species.
Ontarians expect stronger protections from the provincial government for the whole province. This includes all living things, not just people. As written, the proposed ammendment and new Species Conservation Act is a continuous indication of the current government's concerning priorities that sends a clear message to voters for the next election. I call on the government to not retract the current species' protections in place, if not to preserve the precarious ecosystems we all rely on, but to reach your party's untapped voter population by demonstrating that you are willing to put profits and popularity aside and stand up for what matters.
