Our Endangered Species Act is already falling short in enforceability and information. Changing it now would be absolutely devastating for environmental protections and progress in Ontario.
The act, as it stands, is the only small protection extremely vulnerable ecosystems and animals have. It does not stipulate how that protection should be enforced, the boundaries of that protection, nor species-specific, enforceable regulation or law - merely suggestions that become a grey area for municipalities. Improvements should be made to this act instead of changing it to favour short-sighted economic goals.
Our natural resources, endangered indicator species, and carbon storing peatlands need to be the primary consideration for environmental law and legislation changes in this province. If they are not, future generations will suffer the consequences. Not only this, but reconciliation efforts past, present, and future will be null.
