These changes to the present Endangered Species Act are clearly designed to end any barriers from development to simply go forward with damaging projects without any guardrails or compliance. To simply have to register before beginning development in fragile ecosystems that could endanger wildlife or plant life means irreversible damage can happen before anyone can stop the process. Once an ecosystem is destroyed whether by being paved over for a new highway or excavated for building a new mall there is no way of retrieving the invaluable area. This is the kind of legislation that will haunt Ontario’s citizenry in the future when animals and environments are destroyed. Lastly, it is cynical to add the the government can remove species from the endangered list! One can see how that will be used to make way for development. It is vital to have strong legislation and a proper environmental process to proceed any development in lands that are considered sensitive and need protection.
