This Bill is an egregious overstep of provincial authority and creates the conditions for environmental damages. Not only does it reduce provincial accountability, it also gives the Premier authority to designate "economic zones" to the detriment of our environment in Ontario. Red tape exists for a reason - the people of Ontario value nature and habitats, and we don't want the Premier to redefine what a habitat is or change the rules around environmental assessments or endangered species. It's clear that this is a Premier who curries favours for his developer friends, as is evidenced by the Greenbelt scandal. If anything, we should have special environmental zones to protect our environment from unrestricted economic development. The people of Ontario do not wish to change or scrap the Endangered Species Act, and the Premier's attempt to rush through this Bill while the country faces unprecedented threats from the U.S. through tariffs is shameful - it is clear that this is an attempt to fly under the radar, while voters are distracted by another crisis. However, please rest assured that Ontario citizens are paying attention and we care about the environment. Without respecting our environment, there can be no long term economic success. Taking any other position is simply short-sighted. While the Premier may be short-sighted about the environment - and bitter about petty issues like bike lanes - there are many people in Ontario who are strongly against such policies. I am strongly opposed to Bill 5 and urge this government to listen to Ontarians, including Indigenous Peoples, who are voicing concerns about this legislation. Perhaps the Premier should pay more attention to issues that matter most to Ontarians, like improving our public healthcare system, which was damaged by an unconstitutional cap on nurses' wages during a global pandemic.
