I am strongly opposed to the passing of Bill 5. This bill is extremely dangerous and would gut Ontario’s Endangered Species Act, silence Indigenous rights, and give the Premier the power to greenlight mines, highways, and clearcuts with zero oversight — all under the excuse of “economic zones.” I am particularly opposed to the reference to the landfill intended to be built in Dresden, which requires a full environmental impact assessment due to the presence of a creek feeding directly into the river. Bill 5 proposes an override for this assessment in order to fast track the building of the proposed landfill. Dresden and the surrounding area are vital growers of Ontario food, at a time when global food insecurity is reaching alarming levels. This has the potential to be disastrous for the entire country of Canada. I urge you to reconsider this bill. Environmental protection is vital as our natural resources are finite and can never be replaced.
