I am strongly opposed to this proposed law, as it fails to account for the environmental consequences of streamlining protections for at risk species. While the intention to modernize the process may sound efficient, cutting corners through a registration first approach undermines the very safeguards that exist to prevent irreversible harm to Ontario’s biodiversity. The current science based system is in place for a reason; to ensure that development and other activities do not come at the cost of species survival. Fast tracking registration and redefining habitat protections risk weakening oversight and accountability, threatening vulnerable ecosystems that depend on thorough, deliberate conservation efforts.
