I disagree with the entire thrust of Bill 5. It is apparently designed to ride rough-shod over environmental protections as well as Indigenous rights. Particularly alarming is the talk of "special economic zones" where resource exploitation and development can take place without proper environmental controls. While I sympathize with the aim of making Ontario's economy less dependent on the United States, I strongly object to sacrificing the future well-being of our province -- our forests, lakes, water tables, and the great carbon sink of the James Bay lowlands -- to rash short-term economic gain. Development should proceed with all due caution with respect both to Indigenous people's concerns and to our ecological patrimony, which has already been very seriously compromised by a century of thoughtless extractive activity.
