One of my favourite things about Ontario (and Canada at large) is its immense natural beauty and biodiversity. Living alongside countless plant and animal species is a wonderful thing. For this reason, I do not think that environmental exploitation is the key to economic growth. While it may reap benefits in the short-term, what will happen when the rivers run dry? What will happen when the forests are cut down faster than they can grow back? What will happen to Ontario's endangered species when nobody is advocating for them?
As a young woman, I'm worried about the job market -- but I'm more concerned about the fact that any children I bring into this world will not get to breathe the same clean air I breathe, or drink the same clean water I breathe. I am sure that the Government of Ontario can think of a way to stimulate our economy without harming our province's wildlife in the process.
Human beings should not operate as though they have dominion over the natural world. Instead, we should remember that we belong to it too. Therefore we should use our position as a highly advanced species to protect and preserve the environment, not destroy it.
