I oppose this bill. These proposed interim changes to the Endangered Species Act have been framed to seem like they are part of a plan to protect Ontario, but from what? They are changes that will make it easier for land developers and corporations to exploit and harm the environment. Putting Ontario first and protecting the province’s interests should absolutely, inarguably include protecting the environment and all the species that live here. Narrowing the definition of a habitat doesn’t make it “clearer” for what people can and can’t do—it makes it easier for them to destroy the habitats that are essential to Ontario’s ecosystems.
