I am writing to express my strong opposition to Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act. This proposed legislation poses a direct and serious threat to Ontario’s natural heritage, democratic processes, and Indigenous rights, and I urge you to withdraw the bill in its entirety.
One of the most alarming aspects of Bill 5 is its proposed repeal of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The ESA is one of the few tools we have left to protect at-risk wildlife and the ecosystems upon which they depend. Replacing it with vague "goals" and unenforceable measures will inevitably lead to further declines in species already teetering on the brink of extinction. This is not modernization—it is deregulation that puts short-term industrial interests ahead of long-term ecological sustainability and community health.
Equally troubling is the creation of "special economic zones" that would empower the Cabinet to approve major development projects without proper environmental assessment, public input, or consultation with Indigenous communities. This proposal undermines transparency, accountability, and Ontario's duty to uphold Indigenous rights and treaties. Such a move not only sidesteps democratic processes but also risks erasing the vital contributions of Indigenous peoples who have long served as stewards of the land.
Ontarians have not asked for weaker environmental protections or for less involvement in decisions that impact our land, water, and future. Bill 5 would silence community voices, marginalize science, and undo decades of hard-won progress in environmental governance. This is unacceptable.
I strongly urge the Ontario government to withdraw Bill 5 and instead collaborate with environmental experts, Indigenous leaders, and the public to strengthen—not dismantle—our systems of environmental protection. Protecting nature is not a barrier to economic growth; it is the foundation of a healthy, resilient, and just society for all.
